Pruning versus Trimming

What is Pruning?
Pruning involves the selective removal of parts of a plant, such as branches, buds, or roots.
Reasons to prune include:
- deadwood removal
- shaping (by controlling or directing growth)
- improving or maintaining health
- improving or maintaining ornamental value
- reducing risk from falling branches
- preparing for transplanting
- increasing the yield or quality of flowers and fruits
Pruning entails targeted removal of diseased, damaged, dead, non-productive, structurally unsound, or otherwise unwanted tissue from crop and landscape plants.
What is Trimming?
Trimming involves maintaining plants according to a uniform design. This is generally done annually or twice a year, depending on the plants in question. In trimming shrubs or hedges, the object is maintenance of a particular shape and form, whereas pruning focuses on development of tree or shrub structure. Tree trimming, properly speaking, is generally only performed by utility companies in right-of-way maintenance.
